A study by researchers from Boston University and the University of Helsinki found that the January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires may have caused over 440 deaths - more than 14 times the official count reported by California authorities.
Using excess-mortality modeling previously applied during COVID-19, the team detected a 7% spike in deaths between Jan 5 and Feb 1, 2025. The Palisades Fire and Eaton Fire, which together burned 50,000 acres and destroyed nearly 16,000 homes and businesses, were the primary drivers of this surge - revealing a much broader human cost than fire statistics alone convey.
